Translation by Herbert Zhang March 4, 2010
When will the moon be brightly shining?
I asked the heaven while drinking.
Which year are you in this evening,
In the palaces in the sky?
Sitting on the wind I want to fly,
But the jade palaces are freezing,
Because they are really too high.
I started dancing,
and stared at my shadow,
Oh, what heavenly lines!
Down the building,
Through the window,
Why on the sleepless the moon shines?
Regretfully to separation it confines.
Men are sometimes here and sometimes there,
The moon has days to appear and disappear,
To this rule we must adhere.
Hope we can live long, my dear,
To enjoy the moon year after year,
Even in each other’s sphere.
